Optimize After Sales Service with 2D Online Catalogs

Decision in Favor of CATALOGcreator® - Project Start in 2016

SCHWING-Stetter is a leading supplier of machines and plants for the concrete industry worldwide. The company has chosen the electronic spare parts catalog software CATALOGcreator® to optimize its after sales service, and they have already successfully completed the first phase of the project with 2D online catalogs.

Company

The product range of SCHWING-Stetter comprises mixing plants, truck mixers and concrete pumps, covering the entire cycle of concrete production, as well as the transport to the concrete placement and the recycling of residual concrete. In a variety of industries the sludge pumps, manufactured in the plant in Herne, are used around the world, e.g. in the extraction of sewage sludge, in the backfilling of mines and for offshore applications.

Many significant and extraordinary projects were built with equipment from SCHWING-Stetter, such as the One World Trade Center in New York and the new ECB premises in Frankfurt am Main. The Schwing Group manufactures its products at its own production sites in the USA, Brazil and India for the local market and for the region. With over 100 dealers, branch offices and agencies, the company has an extensive, worldwide sales and service network.

Initial Situation

The first exploratory discussions between TID Informatik GmbH and SCHWING-Stetter’s After-Sales and Technical Documentation departments took place in summer 2014. The challenge was to replace the existing Belenus system for electronic spare parts catalogs and to publish in the future 2D spare parts catalogs from a central source to the Web, CD and print.

Up until the end of that year, a Proof of Concept (PoC) workshop was carried out. The aim of a PoC is to match the customer's requirements with the capabilities of the software solution and to define the required steps on both sides to ensure the project is a success.

Requirements

In summer 2015 SCHWING appointed TID to the implementation of the project. "After the official project start in February 2016, we quickly worked out solutions together with TID to provide both the old data from the Belenus solution and all information about the new products to our customers in a 2D spare parts catalog with CATALOGcreator®," explained Werner Herling, manager of Technical Documentation and the Service / Technical Office.

Solution

The raw data at SCHWING are usually PDF files, which are converted into PNG files before being processed in very good quality with the Hotspot Editor - a CATALOGcreator® tool. The Hotspot Editor automatically sets hotspots in documents such as PDF or JPG files and provides the ability to editing and post-processing the data. Thus, all relevant 54,000 drawings could be loaded automatically from the old system without causing unnecessary overhead in the form of rework.

Experiences and Outlook

Already in May 2016 SCHWING replaced the old system and switched to the new electronic spare parts catalogs of CATALOGcreator® for productive use. The result of the first phase of the project impressed everyone involved, and overall the people at SCHWING are very satisfied with the cooperation.

Conclusion

Werner Herling summarizes the experience by saying "The software is very efficient and the level of quality is excellent. The minimized amount of data and an easy-to-use interface are additional benefits, which are highly appreciated. We are convinced that, with CATALOGcreator®, we have found and introduced a modern and innovative software solution for our spare parts management."
