Who needs metadata anyway?

Metadata is a hot topic in technical documentation and is regularly discussed in presentations, articles and blog posts like this one. Interest in metadata in our industry therefore cannot be ignored, but why is this? Buzz words like “intelligent content”, “Industry 4.0″, “content delivery”, “PI class”, “iiRDS” and “artificial intelligence” are on everyone’s lips. These topics come up in different contexts, yet time and again all of them can be traced back to one common denominator – this ominous metadata. Who or what is it? Where does it come from?
